Thinking about going to the Bahamas- other choices?

Want to go to the Atlantis, might stay (1/2 the price) at the Comfort Suites Paradise Island across the street as you can still use all the facilities of the Atlantis. I've been reading about some violent crimes lately targeting tourists (Machete and Shot gun!)- targeted the Segway riders from the cruise ship. Is it safe to go to this place- and wonder into Nassau to check out the markets. If not, are there any other Caribbean destinations that are better? We are leaving from the East Coast- near NYC around June. We want that tropical paradise type of place with great snorkeling- going for a week.

Yes, Crime has been increasing in the Bahamas due to the recession but the segway stuff was an isolated incident. It really has never happened before..... You would be on Paradise Island which is totally safe. Venturing into Nassau isn't really dangerous for tourists, just don't go too far east on bay street( the main street in Nassau, it gets rougher the farther you go.) especially at night. besides that, you'll be fine. If you really want tropical paradise you should go to the out Islands Of The Bahamas( The exumas are great) Nassau really is like the New York city of the Bahamas and full of cruise ship people and lots of tourists, while the out islands are rural and have way better snorkeling and scuba.)

However, if you really want an awesome tropical paradise and are fine with a 4-5 hour flight from New York, I would go to Dominica in the eastern Caribbean. The most untouched island in the Caribbean and no tourists unlike Nassau... St. Lucia is a little more touristy but as pretty.

Water sports at Atlantis/paradise island/.?

Cant find this online. Single parent on a really tight budget, planning a possible to trip to Bahamas. Will stay at comfort suites and my guess is spending most the days and evenings at the Atlantis and beach. How much are water sports? Like jet skis, canoes anything that a 10 year old and I can enjoy. We will do the dolphin encounter but will want to spend a day or 2 at the beach doing water sports.Would like to do a boat cruise one day too so need to know how much I can really afford. If your staying at comfort suites, is there a beach in walking distance other than atlantis. Not sure if Atlantis beach is a real beach or man made.

If you are staying at the comfort suites you can use all the Atlantis's facilities, including swimming pools, private beach, magnificent waterscapes, Lazy River Ride, water slides, health spa, tennis, and Kids Camp. Guests also have full signing privileges at Atlantis' restaurants and lounges. The comfort suites hotel is within walking distance to Marina Village at Atlantis with its variety of shops and restaurants, Paradise Shopping Plaza and many Nassau attractions such as the Queens Staircase and Fort Charlotte. The Nassau International Airport is 30 minutes away.. At atlantis there is a man made beach with Dolphins which you will swim with. There is another man made beach where you can go on peddle boats. There is also two real beaches. One is the cove beach which is only for the cove quests. The other real beach is for the other atlantis guests. I only was on the Cove beach and they did not have water sports but I am sure that they will have water sports at the other real beach.
