Canadian Student Visa?

Hi, I currently live in the Bahamas and i'm trying to get into a medical school in Canada.
obviously i'll need a student visa. However, i can't find a lot of info on how i would go about getting one. I saw online that the Canadian consulate responsible for the Bahamas is in Jamaica.
Can i go to jamaica or the U.S on a tourist visa to apply for a student visa?
How long will it take? cause i'm working and would have a lot of time to spend in a foreign country.
Or would i have to send the application documents (passport etc...) through the mail?
i don't really want to send them through the mail cause i dont want any thing to go missing.
please help

Before worrying about a student visa, get accepted at a Canadian medical school. It's much harder than getting the visa. Once accepted the visa is pretty routine. See if you can't do all but the final interview by mail.
