Why do Americans assume that illegals are only dying to get into America?
I have heard this nonsense several times. Apparently SOME PEOPLE are ignorant that thousands of illegals from Africa die each year trying to make it to Europe (especially Spain, Italy, Greece, and other countries across the water). In fact, many Central Americans die trying to make it to low-wage construction jobs IN MEXICO, in places where all the local workers have gone to the US.
Here are some other immigrant flows where people are dying to get from one country to others:
Iraq: Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Iran
Zimbabwe: Botswana, South Africa
Sudan: Chad, Egypt, Libya
Burma: Thailand
Bolivia: Argentina, Spain, Portugal, Italy
Bangladesh: India
Philippines: Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan
Haiti: Dominican Republic, Cuba, Bahamas, etc.
Sub-Saharan Africa: Morocco, the EU
Look at all the illegal immigrants around the world. Many have died to get there. Educate yourself before you assume this trend is limited to the US.
I have just starred your question because it is high time somebody brought this up. However,I am not too sure what sort of response you'll get. Most people aren't interested in anything that happens outside the U.S. or the countries where it wages war.
Although my recent personal experience of this is with Moroccans trying to cross the Strait of Gibralter to Spain, and drowning to do so, and subSaharan Africans braving the Atlantic to get to the Spanish Canary Islands and often dying in the attempt,I also know about Albanians trying desperately to get into Italy.
Although these illegals risk their lives to get to Spain or Italy,I don't know any Spanish or Italian people naive enough to think that they are doing so because their countries are the best and greatest in the world.
I have found the Spanish and Italians to be cognisant of the fact that the reality of these would be immigrants is so harsh in their homelands that they would go ANYWHERE to try and escape it.
Romanians have recently flooded into Spain looking for better pay. Their jobs in Romania were immediately taken up by CHINESE workers from China desperate for higher wages than those in China.(how bad can it be in China if they want to go to Romaia? similar to the Guatemalan workers going to the workers's paradise of Mexico! that you mentioned)
This is a problem for all the receiver or host countries, almost none of which were ever traditional receivers of immigrants such as the U.S. has been throughout its brief history. They have had to learn from scratch almost overnight. Their space and resources are very limited(Italy and Spain especially).
Just the other day I read in a Madrid newspaper of a public school that had gone from having only Spanish students in it to having 43 nationalities in one grade in a matter of 2 years.
Add.notes to truthseeker and others like him:
I understand and share many of your concerns about illegality and the troubles that lie ahead trying to assimilate or live alongside so many disparate cultures. However,i differ in the approach to the problem. The richer countries of the world in Europe,Canada, the U.S.,Japan and the oil rich countries too should be working together to solve the ROOT of the problem: the poverty in the countries the immigrants escape from. We should do so from pure self interest,to preserve hard fought for liberties and a way of life we have built up. International cooperation not military intervention would go a lot further to creating a more peaceful and prosperous world where more people could live within their borders in such ways as they see fit. Remember, nobody WANTS to be an illegal immigrant or perhaps even an immigrant at all -it's a last ditch choice!
