"Flagging" a merchant vessel?

What exactly does it mean when a vessel sails under a certain country's "flag." Clearly, most of the world's shipping does not actually come from Panama, Liberia, or the Bahamas. Obviously there's some symbiotic advantage to both the shipping company and the flagging country. What is it?

Thank you. It's just a curious thing.

The 'flag; of a vessel reflects the country of registration. All vessels have to be legally registered somewhere. Each country sets the laws under which its registered ships operate. Labor laws, health and safety laws, and taxation are the primary issues. Countries like Panama, Liberia, etc, have lax rules, and in return, they reap the benefits of registration fees (and taxes)

Two Questions about carribean cruise?

My mother won the six flags lottery thing to go to the bahamas on a cruise ship. I am 19 years old so can i go with her? Do you have to be 21?

Second question- Does my mother need a visa in order to go on the cruise or can she just her ID?

Even small children can be seen on cruise ships. But you will need your own passport.

Your mother should take her passport with her too. No visa is required.

Congratulations to your mother on her win!
