Bahamas Passport

Do you need a passport to go on a 4 day Cruise To The Bahamas from Port Canaveral?

My fiance and I are booking our honeymoon to the Bahamas for June 2011 and we were wondering if you need to purchase a passport to go on a cruise to the Bahamas or if you just need some proof of citizenship such as a valid ID and/or your original birth certificate. If we will need a passport how much do they cost and how long are they good for?

You probably can get away without a passport on a closed-loop cruise (one that departs from and returns to a US port). However, it will be a lot easier to get a passport or passport card. The cards cost less - you can't use them for air travel but they are OK for ground & sea travel.

You apply in person at the post office:

I'll be taking a cruise to the Bahamas from the US.
Will I need a passport for a cruise?

As everyone has stated you do not need one if the cruise is round trip. The only problem would be if for any reason you could not return to the ship. Without a passport you can not fly back to the US and that would be the only way to return. You would have to apply for a passport in the Bahamas and wait for it to be issued. A passport CARD is not good for air travel.
