Cruise To Freeport Bahamas

What Shore Excursions Should I Do From My Cruise In Orlando, Freeport, and Nassau?

I am taking a Carnival cruise that goes to Orlando, Freeport Bahamas and Nassau Bahamas and I am interested in hearing people's opinions about the shore excursions. I have gone on a cruise before and found that there are often a lot of things to do on shore that are a lot cheaper than the ones you book on the cruise. Has anyone found anything less expensive to do? Are there beaches that you can go to that do not require paying to get into at all three of these locations? I would be happy taking a cab to a beach and just relaxing there instead of paying the 50 or 100 bucks to go to the beach like Carnival is offering.

Any suggestions or tips on how to get cheaper activities once on shore would be appreciated. Thanks!

Our cruise in May got diverted to these two ports because of H1N1 flu in Mexico, and I was a little underwhelmed by them.

We asked the cab driver to take us to a public beach in Freeport, and after a 10-15 minute drive through an industrial area, he dropped us off in front of a hotel and gave us directions to walk to the beach. We did so, but soon discovered we were on the hotel's property and feared we'd be kicked out at any moment. So, I'm not sure what you'd have to do to find a decent public beach in Freeport.

In Nassau I have better news. There is a nice little beach within walking distance of the place our ship docked. I marked it with GPS at the time, and there is a link below. If you walk west down Bay Street (just parallel the water) when you get off the ship, you will run into it. It's probably a ten minute walk. We spent all afternoon there, and it was nice enough. A local told us it was a safe place, and it seemed to be. There were also locals there who gave massages on the beach. If you'd like to email me I can give you a picture of the beach there too.

We did not do Atlantis, as I am always skeptical of big, commercial resorts like that, but lots of people on our ship did, and it got good reviews. I believe you can buy a day pass there, but I'm not sure what the cost of the pass is. There is a ferry that takes you across to the island where Atlantis is located. (It is visible across the water from the cruise dock).

By the way, I also recommend CruiseCritic.com for great info on ports. The posters there have cruised for years and know all the tricks and local info.

Good luck and enjoy your cruise!

I am going on a Cruise To The Bahamas. What are some fun things to do in Nassau and Freeport?

I am actually going on my first cruise in the spring which is going to nassau! But, I have been to nassau, bahamas already by plane and I stayed at the Atlantis resort. Some fun things to do would be to visit the Atlantis/take the tour if you have never been there. This are aquariums all over and "the dig" is a popular site to see there. You can also go over to the casino at the Atlantis for some fun and you don't have to be a guest. Just be careful because if you arent a guest than you will NEED a tour guide to get onto the beach areas. They check your room cards often as you walk around.

You can also do a snorkling trip which is offered through some cruise ships and through the Atlantis. Those are really fun and you get to see fish up close and go for a boat ride and such.

You can also go shopping in the town at the straw markets but I have heard mixed things about doing that. Some people say not too because there are a lot of natives that keep asking you to buy things and are rude. Other people say its fun to look around and you can get some cheaper stuff.

Another choice for you if you have alittle extra money to spend would be to do the swimming with the dolphins. I know one place you can do that at is called Blue Lagoon Island but I'm sure your cruise line may know other people as well. This is really fun and I had the time of my life doing this.

You can also look to go to a near-by beach at Nassau such as Cabbage Beach or Cable Beach. I will leave you links to those below.

These are all my ideas for Nassau. I have never been to freeport so i'm not sure what there is to do, but it's probably the same type of stuff (snorkling, etc)

**EDIT** - In regard to what the person below me who said, who stated that Blue Lagoon Island is closed... the actual island itself may be closed for swimming and activities and such. I was there last May and the beach portion of the Island was closed and there were just a few people there cleaning up. *However*, the dolphin swim portion was open and I believe it still is. Their website is still running and they are still taking reservations. This dolphin swim just happens to take place at Blue Lagoon Island regardless of it is closed. Check out the website below and sorry if I misguided you. Thanks to the person below too.
