Last minutes cruise deals?
I have been told that some people go down to the port in Fort Lauderdale with bags in hand. They get on board any ship for a crazy discount price. Anyone know if that is true ?
NO!! You cannot do that any longer. Since the attacks of 9/11 the cruise lines have changed their procedures and do screenings on all passengers. Passengers are requested to register either online or by mail at least 3 days before the cruise departs. The reason for this is so that the cruise lines can provide to the Department of Homeland Security a complete listing of all passengers. Those who do not complete the information in advance must be at the port at least 2 hours before the departure time so that the information can be collected. Then the complete listing of passengers must be sent to Homeland Security at least an hour before the ship's scheduled departure.

" Due to new government regulations requiring cruise lines to submit final departure manifests at least 60 minutes prior to sailing, guests are requested to complete Online Check-in no later than 3 days prior to their cruise. If you do not complete Online Check-in 3 days prior, you will be required to complete this process at the pier at least two hours prior to the published sailing time. Please note: All guests must be checked-in and onboard the ship no later than 90 minutes prior to the published sailing time or you will not be permitted to sail. "
So now days last minutes is probably about a week before the departure date, if there are any cabins left. Even in today's economy cruises continue to sell out.

" In most instances there is no space available on our sailings within a week of the departure date and it is a misconception that rates are reduced drastically at that time. While it is possible that staterooms may become available for sale, the rate for these staterooms would have been increasing as the sail date approaches and the demand for space becomes higher. Thus, at the last minute the rates will likely be the same as during the entire last quarter or previous three months. "

I like to be treated well, as do most people I know. When traveling, that can be a little difficult to always have as the status quo. In many places, there are special tours that are only available to groups, including some behind-the-scenes tours that you'd never have even dreamed existed.
