Fly To Bahamas
Bahamas and Oil- is it safe to buy non-refundable airplane tickets?
Do you think it is safe to book tickets for the Bahamas for July given the current situation in the gulf. The tickets for two are about $650 and not refundable! Is there a good site to buy tickets for flying to the Bahamas? Do you have any tips, e.g., times, day of the week, airline, etc.
Yes.. I'd say, No Worries.
Take a look at a map, and you will see that the Bahamas are SE of Florida. Right now, most of the oil is moving north eastward toward the US. It has a long way to go before it hits the Bahamas, besides, Fla should shield it. There is a narrow gap between Fla & Cuba that the oil would have to be blown through. I doubt you will see any effect on the shoreline. In addition, the Bahamas are a group of islands, and the inner islands are protected from the outer islands. Nassau is pretty well protected by Andros Island.
But, if it did reach the Bahamas, consider your plans while you are there... Many tourists tour the island, and look at the beaches, yet they swim in the hotel pools. If that is you, you won't be affected at all, and you would have some very unique photos if the oil did reach Grand Bahama Island.
If you like to scuba, you will be below the oil, and when you come out.. no need to re-apply the Copertone tanning oil... or worries about frizzy fly-away hair. You've seen photos of them washing birds with dishwashing liquid and releasing them unharmed... the same would go for you.
The summer is usually cheapest for the Bahamas, Jamaica and Cancun. It bumps up a little when the kids are out of school, so you might go just before or after summer break.
I don't know where you live, but airfare from Atlanta to Nassau is running about $168. Get on several of the travel sites and try different days in/out. Airline prices change quickly and without logic. Also consider driving a couple hours to a different airport to get better pricing there.
