Why do everyone assume your Jamaican when say your from the islands?

I was born in free port Bahamas. So if you look on the Map I'd be more Cuban, Dominican, or haitian for that fact. But when I tell people I from the islands....Jamaica is the only place they can assume. Why is that? Did Bob Marley stereotype all of us island people with Buffalo Soldier.

I would say Jamaica is arguably the most popular if not populous island country. It's not a negative thing, but I can see why having to clarify your heritage all the time would get to be annoying. I don't really think it has much to do with Bob Marley, but it's not completely out of the question. Rihanna is from Barbados and she says her people worshiped him like a king and adored his music too, and they're not from Jamaica.

But then again, maybe I'm just biased because 95% of my family is from Jamaica. Hopefully next time when you're asked where you're from, somebody will know or at least not assume you hail from Jamaica. =)
